Riding in the Sky

Sometimes we forget, amidst the day-to-day tasks, the beauty that surrounds us. Often we look past the sunset, spoiled by the countless number of them we’ve seen, forgetting how lucky we truly are. With all the tests and essays to conquer, it seems hard to really take a step back and appreciate the simple things. I had almost forgotten the natural beauty of the Ojai Valley until yesterday when I took a trail ride with a couple of friends. We rode through Carp at a leisurely trot, watching the mist from the light rain descending upon the ridge. The light from the setting sun refracted through the fog. We chatted openly about our lives, our school work, and the upcoming break. We quarreled about which trail we should take. We settled on going up Trotting Hill, as we thought Morgan Barnes might be a little too wet. By the time we were at the top of the ridge, the haze had fully descended upon the orchard. We were surrounded by what seemed like the clouds, unable to see on either side. Riding up there felt as though we were riding in the sky, tranquil and calm. I think too often we forget the true beauty that lies in our backyard. It’s nice to be able to remind ourselves every now and then about the truly stunning environment we live in.
