Yesterday, a student who I advised two years ago came in to tell me that she had decided to accept the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship from the University of North Carolina – a program widely known as the “baby Rhodes.” While I wasn’t at Thacher when she applied here, I got to know her pretty quickly after I started my work in the admission office, and in many ways, she was one of my first -and best- ambassadors and mentors at Thacher. Through determination and grit, this remarkable girl has forged a path from a public school in inner city Los Angeles to one of the top universities in the country. As we cried a bit (and laughed as I filmed her taking the envelope to the mailbox), I realized I’ve learned as much from her as she has from me. What an honor.
