Because We Can

Last month was a big one for the Human Rights Coalition. The Coalition is an umbrella organization for any human right-related clubs like Amnesty International or UNICEF. We screened a documentary about U.S. drones, hosted a write-a-thon to free victims of political persecution around the world, and held a candlelight vigil. I love when we host write-a-thons or fundraisers because the majority of the school joins together and participates. But, for me, the vigil was one of the most beautiful events. A small group of club members and I gathered together outside. We lit candles, discussed drone attacks, talked about human rights leaders, and read poems about peace. Born out of an idea, the event took shape and drew in passerbyers.

Recently, it was alumni weekend. Part of this included a discussion between alumni and students representing the school clubs for human rights, cultural diversity, and LGBTQ rights. Thacher students participate in events to help others or go to club meetings on a regular basis, so activism and diversity can always be parts of Thacher life. The discussion made me realize how amazing it is to have such an empathetic community. Clubs have faculty advisors, but they are all student led. We organize as much as we want to do—and Thacher students want to do a lot. Comparing Thacher now to decades ago, there’s a noticeable increase in activisms and students taking initiative.
