Decisive Moments in History

orig_photo250292_3117867This trimester, I started a new class called Decisive Moments in U.S. History. I have never taken a class like it before or even imagined that there could be one in this fashion. A group of teachers from the history department (and other teachers with an interest in the subject) take turns from week to week teaching the class. It’s a great opportunity to get to know all of the teachers as a student and experience various teaching styles. Each week, there is a different topic covered about an important piece of history. I like that there is such a diverse curriculum. The issues are famous ones that I get to learn more about in-depth and may be relevant to current events. Previous topics included the atomic bomb, our relationship with North Korea, and the Freedom Riders. Another unique format of the class is that we, the students, take turns leading the class in a discussion once a week by asking the guiding questions about the subject. I am continuously intrigued by the topics and enjoy the weekly discussions. The class is a great chance to get a brief, but extremely informative look into major events of our society, while learning from the diverse viewpoints of my peers and multiple teachers.
