Serving the Community in St. Joe’s Health and Retirement Center

This trimester I started what I hope will be a long career of volunteering. I guess I can say that I was inspired by the plethora of students who take part in what we call ComServe (which sounds like something out of the book 1984). Nevertheless, after 12 weeks of volunteer work, I have come to truly enjoy helping my community. Every Sunday, I skip formal dinner, catch a ride with other Thacher volunteers, and an adult drives us to St. Joe’s, a rehabilitation and retirement center for the elderly. When we arrive, we hold conversations with the many people who live there. I usually sit at the same few tables, but I always talk with different people. Many of the patients there have lively stories to tell and are eager to know about my life. I loved spending time with the patients there and I am excited to continue volunteering regularly!
