Thacher on the Slopes: Ski Trip to Mammoth Mountain

Armed with warm clothes, skis, snowboards and a cardboard box overflowing with burritos and fried chicken for the 7 hour drive, 55 students and faculty clamored aboard a bus last Friday after classes for a weekend ski trip to Mammoth Mountain in the Sierra Nevada. Rain and snow fell steadily throughout the drive, bringing 8 inches of fresh snow to the mountain, much to our delight. On the following morning, students and faculty alike swooped down runs such as Cornice, Drop-in, Dave’s, Scotty’s, Stump Alley and the well-known terrain parks scattered about the mountain. In the evenings we warmed ourselves by the fire in a handful of A-frame chalets we rented near the Main Lodge. Two days at Mammoth are too few, but our legs probably couldn’t take much more, so we happily returned to Ojai late on Sunday night. The cold mountain air and exercise invigorated us for classes on Monday, although I caught myself during first period thinking wistfully of new fallen snow and the shouts of joy that had cascaded down the slopes for two blissful days.
