A Thacher Thanksgiving

We are now back in the swing of things at Thacher after a week of vacation. For our family, though, this Thanksgiving break was singular, as the Thacher football team made it to the CIF 8-Man Football Championship. This meant that the entire team and the coaching staff stayed on campus to practice and prepare. And it meant that come Thanksgiving Day, we were making a meal for forty in the Thacher kitchen. Led by Lori Schryver (P ‘2005, ’13 and a member of the Horse Department staff), we all scurried about, prepping items and utilizing the whiz-bang-fast convection ovens to finish off dishes. At 1 PM, the boys arrived to help. They donned aprons and set about peeling 3 large bags of potatoes. Aidan ’14, Parker  ’13, Paul ’14, and Leo ’13 finished that task and then we had to figure out a way to mash them all. Meanwhile, Leo continued on with the beans while Jackson ’14 stood by as the resident taste-tester for the potatoes.

Somewhere in the midst of the final push to get food out I came upon a group of boys putting the rolls together for baking. Parents arrived with their contributions–the Gülick-Stutz family arrived from Portland, Oregon, with sparkling cider for all. The Hunter-Daniels came up from LA with salad fixings, and Muriel Waugh brought some phenomenal sweet potatoes. At 3:30 we all sat down together for a first–a Thacher Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful celebration of family, friendship and the warmth of our community.
