Last game of the season, Friday Night Lights, Thacher Toads vs. the Kilpatrick Mustangs. Finally, we were about to play a game on a Friday night, at a good time (6 o’clock, primetime), against a good, athletic, strong team. It was the last game of the season, and seeing as we had won second place in our league, we were not likely to get a home playoff game for the first round, and so it was possible that it would be the last home game for us, for our seniors. We had to make it count. The ball tipped, and the game was underway. They scored 10 points quickly, and went up 10-2, but we battled back. I got in the game, fighting for rebounds, and taking charges, letting myself get hit by guys way taller, and way stronger than me. Our team had a great second quarter, and we went into halftime. But Kilpatrick came out of halftime as fired up as we were in the second quarter, and battled back taking the lead, but we hung with them until the fourth quarter. We were down 8 points with 3 minutes left, and the game was beginning to slip away. But the crowd was still in it, and we battled back, cutting it to 6, then 4, then 2. With less then a minute left, we had 3 possessions where we could’ve taken the lead, but we weren’t able to execute, and we ended up losing by 2 points, a heartbreaker. But for me, I left the gym with a huge grin on my face. We lost, but it was the most exciting game I had been a part of this season, and one of the more fun games I’ve played in.
