I’m Lucy, and I’m a Junior from Jaffrey, New Hampshire. I came to Thacher as a freshman. While looking for schools we used an educational consultant who recommended Thacher.

What I like best about living/studying at Thacher: The people. Everyone is so nice and fun. They make every day a joy and help to make those hard days better and those great days great. It’s a unique group who create the Thacher community and make it the great place it is.

My favorite class at the moment is English because we’re reading about World War I which I find fascinating and we’re studying through poems and books as well as discussion which gives you a different perspective than, say, a history textbook. Mr. Jacobsen, our teacher, keeps the class lively and fun and everyone has great ideas and input.

People at Thacher who have influence me positively and how: Ms. Mully was my advisor last year. She was an amazing person to have around to help adjust to Thacher life and continues to be a source of support. A great aspect of Thacher is that once you create a bond with a teacher or peer, it doesn’t go away — it’s there for your whole Thacher career and beyond.

Advice for someone thinking about going away to school or specifically coming to Thacher: The easiest thing to do when looking at schools can be to brush one off, based on a guide book or website, but go look! Nothing speaks louder about a school than touring its campus, meeting its people, and watching how people live. For me, I almost didn’t consider Thacher, because it was so far away from home, but my teacher convinced me to and I’m so glad I did. Nothing you read can show you how special a school is.

Getty Villa

Yesterday morning the Latin department -19 students, one teacher, and two other faculty members piled into three Thacher vehicles and headed south to the Getty Villa. Modeled after a villa found in the remains of Pompeii, when the site was excavated, the Getty Villa is an oasis in the middle of Malibu, CA. It is filled with gurgling fountains, majestic statues, and cups with ornate detailing. In Latin III we are translating the Aeneid, it was fascinating to see cups decorated with scenes from the Aeneid that brought to life our translations. It was a fabulous day to tour such a special museum.

Gymkhana!!

Lucy '13 : April 16, 2012 11:46 am : Lucy '13

Yesterday my friend and I packed up our cameras and water bottles and jogged out to the Gymkhana field to capture gymkhana in action. As we arrived we waved hi to our friends, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who were boarded upon sweating and excited horses. Country music blared from the speakers at the far end of the field and Mr. Schryver’s voice pierced through the chaos to announce. We ran from race to race snapping pictures of speed barrels, Washington poles, key-hole and everything in between.  It was a great afternoon, though slightly dusty :)

IEA

Lucy '13 : February 23, 2012 1:06 am : Lucy '13

This past weekend, the Thacher Equestrian Team hosted their annual IEA show. While the show itself was only a day, we spent weeks preparing ourselves and the horses for the event. Although, we didn’t do as well as we hoped it was a great day. Everyone finds their niche at Thacher and I’ve found mine on the Equestrian team. It’s a fantastic group of people and we always have a great time- win or lose. It was great to see all our hard-work pay off, as the show ran smoothly and everyone had a great time. I can’t wait for our next show!!

Happy to be back!

“I missed you” rings through the dorm as more and more girls return from winter break. While it is always fantastic, to see family, sleep-in, and eat home cooked meals, it’s equally fantastic to return to school after breaks. When your used to seeing your best friends everyday, three weeks truly feels like forever. Besides seeing your friends, the warm weather, a Rueben’s burrito, and seeing your favorite Thacher pony all making coming back exciting and fun! Despite all these things the winter is often still known as the lull, however looking at my calendar I think I will be plenty busy from now until Spring Break!!!  more »

Will you…

Lucy '13 : December 15, 2011 9:13 am : Lucy '13

Will you go to Winter Formal with me? These eight words have been heard all over campus the past few days, sometimes accompanied with flowers, other times a sweet serenade, and other times a tray of cookies.  At assembly last week indoor committee (our weekend event planners) announced an assigned date winter formal where the guys are to publicly ask their dates. Everyone is bursting with excitement- it’s a first ever indoor event and the perfect way to spend our last weekend on campus before break.
