Once upon a time, someone told me that Junior year was the hardest year of high school. Now, as a senior, I would beg to differ. Nearly one third through the year, I can say that this year is no easier than Junior year academically, with the addition of Senior responsibilities and activities. From writing more »
Bonding, Bragging, Dodging
by Andrew '12 on 09. Jun, 2011 in Andrew '12
Dodgeball is a tradition at Thacher. By far the most common inter-dormitory competition, Dodgeball is a great way for dorms to interact and bond while competing for highly sought after bragging rights. Tonight, my dorm, Upper School (junior boys) faced Los Padres (sophomore boys). After three great matches it was unofficially decided that LP won more »
Born to Run
by Andrew '12 on 10. May, 2011 in Andrew '12
Several times each month, Thacher brings in speakers and scholars who give talks in the evenings. Tonight, Chris McDougall will be speaking about his book, Born To Run, and I am ridiculously excited about his coming. I have been reading his book, which I’ve actually borrowed from the Thacher Library, and am expecting a lot more »
Off Skiing!
by Andrew '12 on 03. Mar, 2011 in Andrew '12
I am on a bus. It is 9:10 on a quiet Friday night in February. Tonight, among fifty other faculty and students, I am on my way to Mammoth Lakes to go skiing at Mammoth Mountain. I have been looking forward to this weekend for a while. This is the first time I have been more »
Table-hopping
by Andrew '12 on 23. Feb, 2011 in Andrew '12
Every Monday evening this trimester, I serve as a Head Waiter at formal dinner. Strictly a job for Juniors, Head Waiting requires that those in the job either give announcements or take attendance at formal dinners. There are ten Head Waiters, two for each of the four weekly formal dinners, and two on reserve. I more »
Making More Time
by Andrew '12 on 25. Jan, 2011 in Andrew '12
This morning I decided to wake up quite early—well, early for a Sunday at least. I love how immediately after I mustered the strength to wake up, I found that I had just added more than three hours to my weekend. The campus is quite different on weekend mornings, at least for an upperclassman. After more »
On Tour
by Andrew '12 on 16. Dec, 2010 in Andrew '12
Today I gave a tour for the Admissions Office. The great part about Thacher tours is that, after you shadow another tour guide, you have completed your training, and are ready to go and give tours to prospective parents and students. I love giving tours because I can reflect on what I enjoy about all more »
X-C
by Andrew '12 on 22. Nov, 2010 in Andrew '12
Every week that I am at Thacher, a special event, specific to that week, occurs. Some of these events may remain in my mind as lasting memories, such as Gymkhana, the musical, or an especially interesting conversation. This week, that special event is particularly important to me. It is 6 am, on a mid-November Saturday, more »
Great Singing Comes to Thacher
by Andrew '12 on 08. Nov, 2010 in Andrew '12
Last night, the Princeton Tigertones, an all-male a capella singing group, performed at Thacher. I was especially moved and inspired by their visit, as I am a member of the Thacher Chamber Singers Ensemble, and enjoy singing a capella every day. Before the Tigertones’ performance, I sat next to one of the singers at formal more »
Harmonic Convergence
by Andrew '12 on 21. Oct, 2010 in Andrew '12
Every Thursday night, I go with six other students and Mrs. Pidduck to the retirement home in Ojai, where we sing songs out of the Thacher Song Book to the people there. Tonight we sang very well. At least I think I did. What I love about singing at the retirement home is that I more »
