David Cline ’87

I am an Assistant Professor in the History Department at Virginia Tech. My second book, From Reconciliation to Revolution, is about religion and the civil rights movement, and will come out from the University of North Carolina Press in fall 2016. I am also one of the Research Scholars and lead interviewers for the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s civil rights oral history project. I have been traveling the country to interview civil rights movement veterans, including Ojai’s own Gloria Grinnell in 2013! Those interviews are available online through the Library of Congress. I live in Blacksburg, Virginia, with my partner, Laura McGuire, and our daughters, Genevieve Cline, 7, and Clara McGuire, 3.

The images attached are of me interviewing John Carlos—one of the two American sprinters who raised their black-gloved fists at the Mexico City Olympic Games in 1968.
