Brian Kopperl ’82, Managing Partner of Renewable Energy Massachusetts LLC, has developed one of the three largest solar energy projects in Massachusetts, a 6 megawatt – 21,000 solar panel facility on a former gravel pit in Bolton, MA. The facility went on line in December 2013 after a 2- year lease/permitting/interconnection engineering/tax & power purchase contract development process. Between local government agencies and utilities, you couldn’t ask for a more deliberate round of counterparties. Solar isn’t for the faint of heart, needless to say. But, taking the fossil fuel equivalent of 590,000 gallons of gasoline off the road every year for 30 years is a good outcome in the end.

“My high school baseball coach [David Livermore CdeP 1973] always used to say that any day we were out playing baseball made it ‘a wonderful day for baseball.’ Even if the infield was sloppy and muddy, and you could barely make it up the first base line, he’d still repeat the same old line: ‘Ahh, it’s a wonderful day for baseball.’ I believe my coach’s refrain to be very apt here today as well: ‘It’s a wonderful day for solar.'”
-Brian, in his remarks during the solar inauguration.
