Virginia S. Shannon ’07

After graduating Middlebury, I launched right into a year-long training program for environmental campaigns and organizing called Green Corps and spent all of last year moving around the country with different organizations. I was first placed in Michigan City, Indiana to work on the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, followed by Denver for a clean water campaign with Environment Colorado, and finished up running a ballot campaign to prepare for the election. Because of my experience in Indiana, I was really drawn to the midwest to work on energy issues after Green Corps and I’ve taken a position as the state associate at Environment Michigan based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I’m running a campaign to increase local solar as well as a campaign against fracking.
I have really fallen in love with organizing and find I am really effective at it with strong leadership skills coupled with a passion for the environment. Certainly two things taught to me at Thacher and Alford Lake Camp where I spent all my summers. It is really exciting to see the Thacher legacy within the environmental movement. Katherine Sawyer ’08 is in this year’s Green Corps class and Emily Kirkland ’09 is working for Environment America next year. Anyways, that is the update from me.
